Vinny will announce one more year

Vin Scully throwing out the first pitch at opening day this year
I knew this day would come but it is still sad..After announcing for 60 years for the Dodgers Vin Scully has announced his retirement date. I will be glad to be a part of the farewell tour and will be going to most if not all of the key moments next season. Vinny will handle this with class..I picture him signing off with a final "good night everybody" and myself in tears....I will be one of millions on that day here in Dodgerland......I started to get emotional reading the announcement today.

2010 will be a very bittersweet season for this Dodger fan.

He is the best ever!
I only wish he had a number to retire. He is the last of what made the Dodgers the Dodgers.
Branch Rickey, O'Malleys, Alston, Lasorda, Fred Claire, Drysdale, Vero Beach, and soon Vinny all gone. The History and Heritage will be gone and the Dodgers will be completely just like any other team. The Dodger identity is passing away before our very eyes. I never dreamed of a day when they would wear red LA hats in games be or not willing to make the big trade (ie Pedro Gurerro for John Tudor)to insure post season wins. They are not really in the Halladay bidding, and could have gotten Lee for a decent price.
Ned Colletti has no guts or sense of Dodger Blue tradition. He blew it with Andruw Jones, and only got it right with Manny because it was a no risk deal, where we gave up nothing, and the market was not in Manny's favor in the off season. I will say well done with Casey Blake & Orlando Hudson though.

Outscored 19-3 so far againts the Cards in the last 3 games. What a shame.

I felt tears streaming down my face on reading in today's O.C. Register that Vinny "may" call the play by play one more year..................the GREATEST announcer of all time!! I was a little concerned when I read that "at this time I am in great health" comment. I hope and pray that he is o.k. Baseball will NEVER be the same without that great Vince Scully voice. I for one will be there for his farewell last inning called even if I have to have a seat on the 5 below Dodger stadium. I grew up listening to the GREAT Scully calling the best play by play game in baseball and would not miss paying tribute to the greatest announcer on earth!!! Viva la Scully!! The game will never be the same without him.

I never dreamed of a day when the Dodgers would have the best record in baseball. I never dreamed of a day when the Dodgers made the postseason three times in five years. I never dreamed of taking batting practice and fielding grounders at Dodger Stadium. I never dreamed of watching my first post season victory since 88 as the Dodgers beat the Phills. I never dreamed of watching Martin take V.P. at a state-of-the art facility in Arizona. I never dreamed of standing in the Dodger clubhouse listing to sweet Lou Johnson talk about hitting. I never dreamed Joe Torre would manage the Dodgers, our second baseman would hit for the cycle, we have a 500 home-run hitter in left, an emerging star in Matt Kemp, and a nasty 21 year old lefty. All of this happened under McCourt. Just imagine how upset some people would be if THE DODGERS DID NOT HAVE THE BEST RECORD IN BASEBALL.

Mike...remember when chase Carey traded mike piazza? That ownership group almost wrecked the team..but now 11 years later and about five years into the McCourt ownership...the dodgers are under good management...andruw jones was not colettis fault...it was jones fault for showing up fat and nit able to hit..and now that idiot has 17hrs so far for the rangers!!...the uniforms have not changed since coming out here except for maybe one day a year for cancer or whatever... The dodgers are tied for the best record in MLB today with the Yankees...their current slide in stl has been the first slump the team has been in all year....we will be fine

I love that the Dodgers have the best record in baseball (for now). But without a trophy in October, it means absolutely nothing.

The Dodgers are not the Giants and Dodger fans should not be like fans of the Giants and settle for mediocre seasons which means (anything short of championships).

The Dodger heritage is one of being the best in every aspect of an organization. From the broadcast booth (nobody worth a damn is there to take over for Vin, nobody could fill his shoes, but c'mon, is Charlie Steiner gonna be the guy?). GM, we keep burning through classes retreads from other teams. The latest being a Sabien protoge. Manager- Torre was great in NY with the highest payroll in baseball, but has never done anything any where else. Bill Russell had a record I believe of 173-149 when he was fired .537 winning percentage in just over 2 years. Torre is a career .540% with the Yankee years bulking up that number where his % was .605. But with the Mets, Braves, and Cards he was under .500%. He struggled to get the Dodgers over .500 last year to squeak out a crappy division. Now the Dodgers are #1 in the same crappier division. AND we cannot beat good teams. The Phillies beat us, the Cards are killing us. The Dodgers are 18 games above .500 against the NL West. And only 5 games over against the other 2 divisions. I will stop now. There is much more to say about pitching heritage and other spots we now lack in. The Dodgers should have kept Russell or signes Scioscia. But for now I will have to settle for this team being Dodgers in name only.

I am sorry for turning a respectful post about the greatest broadcaster on the planet into an angry Dodgerfan rant.

Mike-
I thought we swept the Cubs (who had the best record in baseball in 08) in the playoffs? To quote the buddha, nothing in life is permanet. We can't hold on to some notion that Vin will always call games, Lasorda will manage, and Steve Sax will lead off. You must embrace change and look for the positive aspects in being a Dodger fan. (Such as having the best record in baseball) Yes, all of our boyhood heros are gone but that is life. I love baseball and in a lighthearted spirit ask you what you think the McCourts or Colleti have done right...

Sherrill- Good Job

Halladay- by tomorrow night?? Maybe.

I will take it all back!

If the Dodgers get Roy Hallady they are the favorites to win the WS....Hallady is amazing...btw Mike a question for you...living in Utah as you do....do you have Mlb gameday audio to listen to the games...or XM to do the same....and do you have MLB extra innings to watch them?

Back to Vinny...of course when he retires no one will ever come close to him.no one is in the same league and every announcer is the first to admit that.....

So what will the booth look like in 2011? Right now on TV Vin does all games west of the rockies and simulcasts on the radio the first 3 innings....Charlie Steiner is main and Rick Monday is color on the radio for all 162 games. For all games east of the Rockies the TV duo is newcomer Eric Collins and Steve Lyons doing color. Collins is doing fine so far and Lyons has always been one of my favorite announcers from the FOX days.....the main job is basically Collins to lose at this point.....with respect to Charlie Steiner...I don't like him, I don't like the cadence of his delivery and other things...Rick Monday is ok and will probably always be on radio.....All five of our current announcers are better than any other team...if you don't believe me subscribe to Mlb gameday and take a spin around the dial...Mariners announcer, and Astros announcers are particularly awful.....

But in my perfect world....I want Jon Miller to replace Vin Scully...of course we would have to take him from the Giants.

None of the above. I do not have pay TV, nor do I have any pay radio. If I want to follow a game, I have to watch little dots run the basepath on Yahoo sports or a similar sight and read the updates. Or after about 8:30pm Mountain time I can sit in the car and pick up a horrible reception. The only game viewing I have seen in the last few years is going to the MLB.com website and watching highlights.
To be honest. I am in an uncharted territory for me. At the current time I have no idea how I will make a house payment or buy groceries. So watching baseball has taken a back seat to trying to scrape up money to feed the kids. Somehow I have kept up on my house without ever being late and not fallen behind on any bills. So yeah!!
Next month is looking spooky for now, but we have figured it out up til now.

Well at least the internet is no cost except the monthly access fee......if you are in socal I'll take you to the ravine on me.

I think we pick up Dodger games on a Vegas station. I am only 2 hrs from there.

Internet is FREE when your neighbors have unsecured wireless!

We are just going through a rough spot, but I paid cash for my minivan and my house is up to date. I could have it a lot worse.

Wow, I was just thinking. I do not think I have ever seen Ethier, Kemp, Loney, or Martin in a live at bat, it has always been replays. Same with Billingsley or Kershaw pitch.
In fact, I do not think I had seen a game on TV since at least when they got Jose Lima a few years ago to finish the season.

Vinny is and always has been a class act. You learn so much from just listening to all the history he knows. He makes everything so interesting. On a personal note, as you know, he was a client of mine when I worked at the clothing store in BH. He was always cordial, polite, and remembered my name and took my advice on what would be good choices. He has a way of making everyone feel special. So glad we had so many years to enjoy him. This last year will be extra special. I know it will be so tough for you, Garrett. He's a hero of yours. At least we will have you to do your great impersonations of him. Go Dodgers and give Vin the pennant for his final time.

Wow, how many walk off at bats is that for Ethier this year?
