And you run, and you run, to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking..

Sad news today as founding member Richard Wright of Pink Floyd has died.  I saw him play in 1994 at the Oakland Coliseum and it was one of the best concerts ever.  Pink Floyd is one of a kind, totally original, and their album "Dark Side of the Moon" is one that no self respecting fan of music should be without.

I know that Pink Floyd is a very popular band loved by millions. But like with R.E.M., I never quite got what was great on the mass popularity level. Then you have great bands like Rush that are popular with pockets of people but never really caught on with the masses.
Garrett, can you explain the human mind on this type of thing. It has always baffled me. I have met many people that love a Rush song when you put it on, yet they have no idea who Rush is. And had a lot of people who know who Pink Floyd or REM are but are not particularly fond of the music. why is it that the two lessor (in my opinion) are household names and the better not. That has been the general opinion of people i have talked to as well.

Yo Mike....I am a huge fan of both Rush and Pink Floyd...I have seen Rush about 6 times in concert, the first time being in 1992...I saw Pink Floyd at their last concert in 1994. I am a casual R.E.M. fan....I like their greatest hits and that's about it....If someone invited me I would probably go the concert, but that's about it.

As for people knowing the song and not the band Rush, they are probably listening to "Tom Sawyer" or "The Spirit of Radio" these songs are heavily played on FM classic rock, among others, "The Trees" "Limelight" etc... Rush has a Massive cult like following, but they are never a truly mainstream commercial band.

Pink Floyd put out "Dark Side of the Moon" which has been on the charts since it came out and is one of the highest selling, and most well known albums ever. The album art with the prisim is iconic, and can still be found on t-shirts with the kids today 36 years later. Because of the fact they never put themselves on the album covers and other reasons, a lot of Pink Floyd fans can't name anyone in the band..(Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and the deceased Richard Wright)

I can't say who's better between Rush and Pink Floyd, they are just way too different. In high school though I would have said Rush.
