I had lunch with Steve Donahue today and he told me that he has voted for Republicans his entire life but he was thinking about voting for Obama. I asked him why and he said, "Matt, two words-Sarah Palin." I said Steve, say no more.

My mother in law voted Republican for the first time in her life. She has always been a union loving, tax and spend, pro-socialism Bay Area liberal who hates McCain and Palin, but cannot bring herself to vote for a black man. this is going to be interesting.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...............very
interesting "ad". BHO is targeting
McCain for saying that he needs to "perhaps" have someone as V.P. that has economic experience and then highlighting his pick. But, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..........let me think about this. Palin, McCains V.P. pick has more experience with economics as Governor of Alaska than the Presidential candidate, BHO has. Of coarse unless we count his days of "Community Organizer", HA!! Weak to say the least! love ya, Susan

Actually Obama, Biden, and McCain all have significantly more economic experience then Palin. Obama and McCain are also better educated, smarter, and more experienced then her.

Palin holds a BA in journalism, compared to Obama who holds a BA from NYU and a law degree from Harvard (I heard that was a tough law school (: )

Her economic experience includes running a 400K state run progaganda campaign that encourages the practice of gunning down wolves from helicopters. Also it includes increasing the revenue of her township Wasilla, AK by demanding $1200 for a rape exam. Also in Wasilla she built a 15 million dollar ice rink which cost the city 1.67 million dollars resulting in the city having to cut library services, postpone land improvments, and raising fees (That's her legacy you betcha!) ....As Governor of AK in addition to the $ for blowing away wolves, she enthusiastically supported the Bridge to Nowhere project in '06, she also tried to use state funds to pay wolf hunters a $150 bounty per wolf that they blew away. This was shot down as illegal under AK bounty hunter laws.

Also...she...Does not know what the V.P. actually does. “As for that V.P. talk all the time,” she told CNBC’s Larry Kudlow in late July, “I tell ya, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me: What is it exactly that the V.P. does every day? I'm used to being very productive and working real hard."

If you want to compare experience with Obama...Palin has two years experience in State government, compared to Obama's 7 in state and 3 in Federal.

The first time she travelled outside of the US was last year

She was unable to name a single supreme court case

Her foreign policy experience consists of "She can see Russia from her house"

She has proved to be a terrible misstep for McCain.....that's why her negatives are near 50% and that is why all these true conservatives Noonan, Will, etc. are so dumfounded and upset at McCain for this. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but it soon became apparant that she is an absolute amateur.and an embarrassment.

Someone can be the most educated, "book smart" person in the world and go to the "smartest" college in the world but it doesn't necessarily make them "common sense smart". I don't have a college education and have NEVER felt inferior to people that do. My point is that the definition of "smart" is very broad and encompasses so much in our daily lives. To say that Biden, Obama and McCain are better educated and smarter than Palin on "paper" is just plain wrong. With regard to the experience factor. Longevity may give the impression that someone has more experience and therefore better prepared for the job but in actuality it's what you do with that experience that really matters. Love ya, Susan

I agree with "Serenity now" on this point. But hey I am a dummy with only a little junior college in my background. But I did ace Philosophy, Government, Economics and U.S. History there. I suck at math though.

That does not mean I feel Palin is the right person for the job though. I just feel that the education paper trail and the number of years you have been mucked up in the party system is the best determining factor for who is best. That would mean before he dies, Strom Thrumon should have been president or Robert Bird.

Two things that are hurting McCain are
1- Palin- bad choice, although I am a fan of a Mr. Smith going to washington, she is not one. I think we was chosen to be the token woman in a losing fight, like Fararo was when Mondale was going to lose. BTW, I find it hard to believe she cannot name Roe v Wade much less any others.
2- John McCain is old, and his past is too far past. People under 40 (like me) cannot as hard as we try, connect with a vietnam war vet. He may as well been a POW in the Spanish-American war.

Big guy-
Can you ghost write my blog for me when I am on vacation?

On the subject of VP's.

Joe Biden seems to get very favorable media coverage even though he constantly says stupid things.
I was just a kid back then. But why is he not treated similar to say Dan Quayle was?
Palin deserves what she gets from SNL etc. "W" has earned his mocking from the media and SNL, late night talk etc.
Biden is a A1 bafoon. I am sure he is a bright guy, what I mean is he does not think through things he says and sounds like an idiot.

"I don't have a college education and have NEVER felt inferior to people that do"

Serenity Now and Mike, sometimes some intellectual humility can be a good thing.

99% of people who earned their way through MIT, Harvard Law, Princeton, etc have had to compete with and out perform the brightest and greatest minds the world has to offer in their respective fields.

Contary to common belief, being loud and opinionated doesn't make the comman man any smarter, but being trained and tested in the highest institutions in the world usually does.

I'm not one of them either, but I have respect for those who have because they achieved things people like us haven't.

Sailing Vessel Serenity NOW said...

Pauly: I never mentioned anything about NOT respecting someone's intellect. What I said was that someone can be the brightest and most educated "book smart" person in the world and go to the "smartest college" in world BUT that doesn't necessarily make them "common sense" smart. And I stand by it.

You, betcha'!! Susan

I agree with Susan here. I have no lack of respect for those that go on to higher education and excell. I just felt that the lack of that is not really the best measuring stick for qualification.
Some of the brightest and most effective people I know who have college degrees whether it be from secular or bible college say very similar things.
The most education they got in college was not what they learned in the class room. The two most important things they say the got from college was learning how to study and debate and discussion with other students. Those things prepared them most for the world than anything that they actually got a grade for.
Now a person could miss out on those things even at a highly recognized college say for instance if everyone is lockstep in line with each other already whether liberal or conservative.

Gar, I appreciate that you are actually starting to get into the question of 'what that experience is' (not very much, but a little bit). One thing that has been maddening in this election cycle is HOW the questions have been asked. 'Who has the MOST experience?' rather than WHAT is that experience and WHAT would they do if elected. It is like QUANTITY trumps QUALITY. The question must be asked what would the person do, regardless of how long he or she has been doing it. Quite frankly the way the recent arguments have played out have seemed like the political equivalent of arguing that it would be better to marry a prostitute than a virgin, because, 'after all, she is more experienced.'

Garrett said...

Brett, I have missed your subtle sarcasm, I am not going to write a college thesis paper on "experience", I could if I wanted to, but that would take to long and I don't want to spend 8 hours and several rewrites doing this blog....but If you wish you may write your own blog and call it

"Crazy Brett's world of Calvinist/Libertarianism"

Peace!!

Brett said...

Now, I am amused.

I wasn't being subtly sarcastic. While I might say that I don't think you have been wholly consistent in your pursuit, I do appreciate that you have laid out WHAT Gov. Palin has done and what you disagree over. That is helpful. I am not a fan of Palin by any means and that was helpful to hear some of her background. I was really and actually complimenting you - sorry to let you down.

NOW for the subtle sarcasm regarding your blog suggestion.... thanks for disagreeing without being disagreeable. :)
